As we all know, man has the ability to adapt to its environment. However, man also has the ability and knowledge to come up with an idea and invent things and devices in order to live a more comfortable life. Air conditioners are just one of the ideas that man have invented in order to beat the sizzling heat of a warm day. What do we really know about air conditioners? Except that these wondrous appliance keeps one’s coolness on a hot summer day. What do we know about the history of air conditioning? For starters let us begin with “who and when was air conditioning invented”.
Air conditioner was a product of a brilliant man known as “Willis Haviland Carrier”. Willis Carrier was a mechanical engineering graduate of Cornell University. Carrier works for a company that makes heaters, blowers and exhaust systems. On later years became the head of that company and renamed it Carrier Air Conditioning Company (and later on invented the first refrigeration machine), hence, the “Carrier Air Conditioners”. In the long history of air conditioning, the first customers of the Carrier Air Conditioning Company were Madison Square Gardens and chambers of the House of Representatives of the United States of America. And the first ever house to have an air conditioner installed was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As the years go by, air conditioners have become more and more popular. Today almost all buildings and structures have air conditioning systems. Air conditioners can also be found in houses. Which only proves that more and more people are buying some sort of air conditioning system which is the reason why air conditioning sales have boomed over the past years.
Fast forward to today, air conditioning has become more and more complex in order to be more and more energy efficient. Because the area and size of spaces that air conditioners need to cool down, manufacturers have come up with a formula that would determine what kind of air conditioner (e.g. power, energy consumption, etc.) is right for a particular area. This is called the “air conditioning load calculations”. Air conditioning load calculations calculates the appropriate size of air conditioner needed. However, calculating the appropriate size of an air conditioning unit is somewhat complicated. It is advisable to seek advice from an air conditioning system contractor for an accurate calculation.
Air conditioning is a method of controlling the condition of the temperature of an enclosed area for a more favorable environment. Air conditioners regulate the four physical properties of air in order to do so. These properties are temperature, humidity, motion and circulation, and aerial particles. These properties must be controlled in order to achieve a more comfortable environment. The management of the temperature in air conditioning also comprise of heating and cooling procedures.
Air conditioning systems can be found almost everywhere you turn on an urban environment. Business establishments attract customers by means of air conditioning. Automotive air conditioning is present in almost all means of transportation today (e.g. cars, trains, airplanes, etc.). Even large industries use some type of air conditioning systems for their operation (these system regulate a more precise temperature control. Offices of companies have air conditionings to make their employees more productive (Hawthorne effect).
For most people air conditioners have been a part of their everyday urban life. It has brought many benefits to everyone. Comfort, being number one on that list. A hot day can bring about inconvenience to (if not all) everybody. Most people could not or would not imagine what it is like without air conditioners. The main benefit that air conditioner gives is that it can bring cool air during warm days. Especially during summer where the days are hot and humid.
