Air Conditioner Types

Are you thinking of buying an air conditioner? Or, perhaps you are not satisfied with how your current AC is working and you want to replace it with a new one. Whatever you reasons can be, it is pretty obvious that you need to know the different air conditioner types to help you decide on what suits your special needs.

Besides knowing the different types of air conditioners, it is also as important to understand them. Many people end up dissatisfied with the performance of their air conditioners because they have overlooked the importance of understanding these precious pieces of appliances. The designs, operating principles and components must be properly considered. In addition, you can also save a lot of bucks from maintenance and electric bills if proper selection, sizing, installation, maintenance and proper use are being followed.

There are two basic types of air conditioners, which include room air conditioners, split-type central air conditioners, and package system, air conditioners.

Room Air Conditioner

For room air conditioners, they only work to cool certain rooms and not the entire house. In other words, these air conditioning units only provide cooling exactly where they are needed. Therefore, if you have plenty of rooms in the house, you might need the same number air conditioners.

Although, less efficient compared to central air conditioning units when it comes to cooling performance, room air conditioners are less costly to operate. This makes room air conditioners ideal for single-room apartment units.

Central Air Conditioners

Central air conditioners are another type of air conditioning systems that are mostly found on large companies. Unlike room air conditioners, central air conditioners work in cooling the air of the entire house through a system of supply and return air ducts. The supply air ducts and registers, which may include openings on the walls, floors, and ceiling covered by grills, bring cooled air from the air conditioning unit to the house. As cooled air circulates the house, it will eventually become warmer and will flow back to the central air conditioner through the return ducts and registers again.

Central air conditioner comes in two forms, a split-type air conditioner and a packaged type system. A central split-type air conditioner is a type air conditioning system that is composed of two components which are the indoor components and outdoor components. The outdoor components of these air conditioner types are composed of two devices; these are the compressor and condenser. Thermostats and air vents are mostly found indoors.

On the other hand, the other type of central air conditioning system is the packaged air conditioner system. On a packaged system, all of the components put together on a single outdoor unit. These single outdoor units are usually found on either beside the structure or on the roof.

Ductless Air Conditioners

Ductless air conditioners have similar traits of some air conditioner types (window air conditioners or through the wall air conditioners and central air conditioners). These types of air conditioning systems are invented as a substitute to other air conditioner types that utilize air ducts in order to cool down a specific structure or area. Ductless air conditioners operate like a split air conditioning system, only these types of air conditioners are smaller and less bulky. From the name itself, ductless air conditioners does not use air duct to vent cool air. Also with these types of air conditioning systems, installation is much easier because these systems do not require wall or window space for installation.

Air conditioners are one of the miracles of technology. These electrical appliances allow man to live and work in a more comfortable environment. And has recently been a part of everybody’s everyday life.
