The name Haier came from the Chinese transliteration of its partner (Liebherr is pronounced as “Li-bu-hai-er” in Chinese. Because of the success of the Haier Group, the municipal government of Quingdao asked the company to take control of the Quingdao Air Conditioner Plant in 1991. With that takeover, Haier air conditioners were then introduced to the market.

Haier moved into the United States in 1999, focusing only on compact refrigerators and electric powered wine cellars because both the industry of compact refrigeration and wine cellar industry were then underdeveloped has the potential to grow. With the growth of the two industries in the United States, Haier then constructed its own manufacturing facility in the United States that became operational by the year 2002.
